[caption id="attachment_3701" align="alignleft" width="200" caption="Summer"][/caption] My 3rd year of graduate school starts in exactly 2 weeks! Time to hurry up and feel ready before I feel completely behind again. For those who are wondering what on earth I am studying and how much longer I'm studying it: Political Science, specializing in Comparative Politics (world politics, not the tea party), 3-4 more years. No, Mom, I am not doing environmental policy, and no, family, that doesn't mean I transferred schools. It just means I finally got around to correcting all of you ;) . While we're at it: the horses inked onto my shoulder are not cave paintings. So... I updated my Journalism page ...
Even though over-plurality is tolerated in other University of Colorado at Boulder realms (namely, the 4 or 5 "official school websites that all are essential and have different school things on them and are not merged"), I was not able to register for every graduate seminar in my department. How annoying. I'm having the worst time being focused and directional about my course and sub-field selection. Explanatory side note: of the 6 sub-fields in our Political Science department, we choose 1 major field, a second major (taking comprehensive exams in both), and a minor field (coursework only, no comps). Policy, International Relations, Comparative Politics, American Politics, Methods, and Political Theory are our choices. Everything sounds interesting! Which I guess is how ...
This time 'round, I chose swim... I just finished a 3 week block with 61 kilometers of swimming in total, a new record for me. After a couple of lessons with Monica and plenty of FAC swim practices, it's become clear to me that swimming is sort of like losing weight. There is no magic secret pill that will replace hard work! Swimming 20k a week takes me kind of a long time. On the plus side, I am enjoying the time in the water, and, per my last post, I'm totally not pale! School starts tomorrow. I teach an 8 a.m. recitation section (which is what ...
"This is Boulder. We don't get pale, we just get cold!" - Michael Lovato So cold right now Indeed indeed. When it comes to swimming, Boulder seems to think it's in the tropics. People swim outside, regardless of whether it's 13 degrees (yesterday) or 9 (Friday, when I actually wussed out and went to the indoor short-course yards pool, oh how inferior, at North Boulder Rec Center. Julie Dibens and Mirinda Carfrae were there too. But yesterday, since it was New Year's Day, my indoor options were closed and I had to suck it up). Luckily, I bought a swim parka at the ...
It means Halloween is upon us and I'm again unprepared. I have a great costume idea, but ideas get you nowhere when you get fed up and declare you hate Halloween only 5 minutes after going to the Halloween Spirit Store of tacky disgustingness. But, where the crap do you find gold body paint and butterfly die-cut molds? Where is MJ Designs when you need them?? "Cold" also means a segue into winter training and my 3rd annual assertion that THIS is going to be THE YEAR that my swim takes off! It really is though. To that end, beyond laughing respectfully at Dave of course, but to that end ...
On Wednesday I went to office hours (no I did not call her "dude") to discuss my complete lack of a paper topic with my professor. Now I might have a topic. During the conversation she asked how everything was going in general, and we talked about one of my other classes, Scopes & Methods in Political Science (a standard course in poli sci graduate departments). It's one of those classes where, in the reading, after I finish rolling my eyes over all the "intellectual masturbation", I feel like I understand the concepts. But then I show up to class and after two and a half hours of multi-syllabic complicated-sentence-structure discussion, I'm kind of like wow, I don't think I ...keep looking »
