Recovery seems to be going pretty well. I'm finished with 2 weeks of my prescribed 6 weeks of non-weight bearing on my right leg. I can do lots of things on crutches, for example I can carry a full hot mug of tea from my kitchen to my room without spilling, I can go up and down stairs, and I can balance with my feet suspended for over 5 seconds in a totally safe manner. I can also use them to vault myself onto my bike without breaking rules of how much I can bend my hip, which is not much! (I get to bike 5 minutes a day ...
Since we last spoke, recovery has gone pretty well. I had a bike fit a week ago (my 4th this year!) to address my leg length discrepancy more specifically--I now have a 3mm lift under my right cleat to address the shortness in my tibia, plus that cleat is 5mm further back than the left cleat to address the shortness in my femur. I've had a lift under the cleat for a while, but not the offset cleats... it feels WEIRD!!! And, oddly, much straighter than before. So I'm building my riding back up somewhat slowly and methodically. Meanwhile, I'm feeling blessedly not-horrible about my swimming, and great about my running! You know, running with fancy triathletes, no big deal. I owe ...
Here's the latest on my back problems, which might be of interest to any of you out there experiencing back pain or riding with shims under your cleats. Today I went to the Boulder Center for Sports Medicine to determine definitively whether I have a leg length discrepancy. Without an X-ray it's not possible to tell if crookedness is structural, or if it's just a functional result of various muscle weaknesses. Most people in the peoples'-bodies industry will say that a structural leg length discrepancy is rare. Usually it's functional, they say, you don't really need that lift/shim/etc. But after saying that to me, most of these expert people have followed up by saying it really looks like I might have a ...
I raced another off-road triathlon this past weekend: the ITU Cross Triathlon World Championships slash XTERRA Southeast Championship in Pelham Alabama. It was in Oak Mountain State Park, outside Birmingham, and for my first trip to Alabama this was pretty much the ideal destination. The trails were really nice, the terrain beautiful, and the people hospitable. I had a great homestay too. [caption id="attachment_3634" align="alignnone" width="119" caption="See, the trails were nice!"][/caption] As for the race, it was rendered yet another non-event-of-2012 for me when I started getting searing back pain almost as soon as I hit the trail on the bike. It hurt so much.  I'm ...
This was my second year racing the Rev3 Knoxville Olympic distance triathlon. Next year will be my third year, it's one of my favorite race courses and race locations! I was really happy with how the race weekend went. I got to spend great time with other athletes and teammates, thanks to the fact that many of us stayed in the host hotel (which had spacious rooms and great amenities, including free internet, thanks Holiday Inn Worlds Fair Park!). And I enjoyed checking out the new Lazer Helmet colors at the expo. [caption id="attachment_3622" align="alignnone" width="149" caption="Two of my favorites... Lazer + Rev3!"]...
I raced my first triathlon of 2012 on April 14 outside Las Vegas. After racing one super fun small Xterra last year, and after spending more and more time on my mountain bike to the point of justifying a gorgeous upgrade, I decided to race the Xterra USA championship series this year! Las Vegas was the first stop. The swim was pretty normal, there isn't a whole lot you can do to make an off-road triathlon's swim more "rugged" than an on-road triathlon's. It was a little bit cold though. My swim was OK, I started out on a girl's feet and after a couple hundred meters I realized hey wait a minute, this girl is SLOWER than me! ...
