So I'm in the middle of working on a poster presentation, it's going awesome, at 8:43 p.m. on a Friday night, after taking myself out to study-break ice-cream, and some guy named Adam calls from some resort in Breckenridge because they sponsor Tri for the Cure and since I raced it in August, I qualify for a special rate of something like $100 a night, am I interested. Well. "Since I won the race can you give me two nights free?" He said he'd have to call me back. Maybe I should have offered to take him as my date, that might have been a more successful bargaining move. -- ...
I've been on a bit of a blogging break since, well, since school started pretty much. But more recently I was on a training break (it lasted five days and then had to get revived for three) and now I'm on Thanksgiving break! These are all the good kind of break, by the way. Anyhow, in case anyone is curious about what my schoolwork is all about this semester, some gory details: One project I am doing is on fire mitigation policies in Colorado. Are prescribed burns underutilized? If so, is it politically driven? How so? Are policies more likely to change in the wake of a wildfire disaster than in expectation of one? It's been pretty interesting so far - the issue ...
A few weeks ago, one of my professors said that if I started to feel lost or overwhelmed (who, me?) any time during my first year in the program, just "keep kicking". Keep doing the work and keep going to office hours and keep reading and eventually it will feel under control again. Then the other day at swim practice, Dave Scott told me that I'm lazy. He said the only reason I can't kick and my feet keep dragging is I'm lazy (which, I respectfully laughed out loud). So, thing 1, to my professor: do we need a new metaphor? And thing 2: ...
Or really, academically subsistent living? Grad school has been wonderful so far, but I am still very much on a day-to-day, what-the-crap-is-due-NOW kind of pattern. Readings, memo's, homework sets, and big-picture stuff. Last week I had to settle on research questions for my two big projects this semester. I also proctored a midterm, and now I'm grading the midterm. Which, kids these days: it's Forest Service not Forrest [Gump] Service! Training took a bit of a back burner last week but now I'm back at it, in preparation for the Amica Sprint in a few weeks. Goal #1 is to have fun, goal #2 is to stay on course, goal #3 is to be awesome. Oh, and since we last spoke, ...
On Wednesday I went to office hours (no I did not call her "dude") to discuss my complete lack of a paper topic with my professor. Now I might have a topic. During the conversation she asked how everything was going in general, and we talked about one of my other classes, Scopes & Methods in Political Science (a standard course in poli sci graduate departments). It's one of those classes where, in the reading, after I finish rolling my eyes over all the "intellectual masturbation", I feel like I understand the concepts. But then I show up to class and after two and a half hours of multi-syllabic complicated-sentence-structure discussion, I'm kind of like wow, I don't think I ...
Temporary Tattoo (I hope) This week, I am particularly grateful for the time I spend training. It makes me feel like I am competent at something! Especially when my day is constructed in increased-aptitude order, i.e. School-Swim-Bike-Run ;) . I know that it's supposed to be this way, that the first few days/weeks, and perhaps beyond, of a graduate program kind of make you wonder why on earth they accepted you. My class notes from yesterday have in giant letters "i will not raise my hand again i will not raise my hand again" but five minutes after typing it, ...
