Today I did a bike race. A criterium! How exciting!
I had a great start but then suddenly there were girls on both sides and I freaked out. Then I realized that my last criterium was… exactly three years ago. The 2007 San Rafael Twilight. I remember being at the front a lot at that race, but my how things have changed!
I tail-gunned it for most of the first half, trying to get more comfortable and relaxed. Then I headed up to the front and took some pulls (because obviously the break was already gone). Then I’d be at the back again, then the front, then the back, mostly the back though
. I wasn’t getting any love from my fellow racers, but when I looked at photos I realized why…
Saddle bag? No-name kit? Triathlete shoes?? Not even wearing socks?! SADDLE BAG?!?!!? Argh! I wouldn’t have let me take a wheel either!
I have a bit of the racing bug though, I’m excited to do some more bike races. It’s a nice feeling!

This post made me smile. I haven’t had the balls to jump in a cycling race yet. Maybe later….
I LOVE CRITS!!! At least you had fun out there
And you know what is cool too: saddle bag…no SOCKS (how could you in a bike race
hihihi)…I bet the other racers counted you out because of that … but what they didn’t know is that you are a machine on the bike!!! I love it!!!
You just needed streamers and an orange flag to look more non bike racerey. Nice job though. I raced once and a guy with a blue short sleeved oxford passed me. He wasn’t wearing chinos though.
That is sooo funny. Is the saddle bag that bad?
I think a Cascade Bike Club spoke card would have completed the look.
