…instead I get giant KNIVES in my back. Argh. For the fourth time in my brief triathlon career, I’m heading into a big race with stabbing pains under my shoulder blades. Last time this happened, I thought it might be mental, a psychosomatic outcome of stress and race fears. But I couldn’t be more excited and positive about Wildflower, I barely feel stressed, so it’s got to be something else, right?
I think what maybe happens is that I work my body pretty hard during regular training, so that makes me susceptible to tweaks and whatnot. Then taper time comes and I am super vigilant about lazing around and doing nothing, which often results in Netflix marathons (who else loves Burn Notice?! Is all that arts and crafts MacGyver stuff for real, like would it work in real life? Who misses the MacGyver mullet though?? Doesn’t Katya Meyers look kinda like Gabrielle Anwar??)! I’m pretty sure that Netfliz marathons are REALLY BAD for my back because I watch all my DVD’s on my laptop, with probably not-the-best posture. Argh. I bet I’d be better off doing 4 hour rides this week… So, my best efforts at taking care of myself are resulting in major self-sabotage. At least, according to my theory.
This morning I called the world’s greatest chiropractor, Phil Spencer, to enlist some help. Fingers crossed that he finds me an adequate stand-in chiropractor here in San Diego
.
In other news, isn’t this the most adorable thing you have seen all day??

4th time…I am voting not psychosomatic. Maybe it is just a sign that you are READY!
)))))) and need to go get some hands on help:)
I hope it all gets better before the race day. Enstein is soooo cute.
I totally do the same thing and about 90% of the time DO end up getting sick during the taper. My body is like “YES! Finally!! A REST, Let’s let every little bug get right in here, it’s rest time!” So, I’ve been fighting it all week myself before St. Croix 70.3. Good Luck at Wildflower! I hope you tear it up my dear! I’ve been meaning to ask you about who did you AWESOME amazing race suit? Was it splish or someone else (or both, like a combo deal!?). I just love it and might need to do something like that too. Go to the doc, get fixed up, and ROCK IT OUT C!!
Hey Kim-
Thank you!
Splish made the suit, but Tai Blechta (taigraphx.com) did the design – he actually did a couple designs for me, the other one I’ll wear in Korea and at Treasure Island, I can’t wait.
Have a blast at St. Croix! I have a feeling that come race day, we’ll both feel great

Courtenay:
Part of the rest week should be body maintenance – massage, roll and stretch! What’s happening is your muscles recover, build and tighten. This strains all the connections if you don’t stretch or exercise. I get this from time to time when I don’t maintain on my rest days or tapers. Good luck!
Forgot to mention – I’m also a big fan of Burn Notice. Can’t wait for the new season!
