Adventure Day on the Bikes, CO Remix
Category: Lazer Genesis, careening towards trees at high speed, cool stuff, i'm moving here, training | Leave a Comment
Ben and I really like taking our bikes on routes for which they were completely not designed. Fishtailing through mud on carbon road or tri bikes with 23mm tires makes training even more awesome than usual!
Today after swim practice we headed up to Gold Camp, which is a road that climbs up out of Colorado Springs, and there is park there called Red Rock Canyon with trails for hiking, running, and mountain biking. Our ride involved a couple of miles on dirt and mud, even through some tunnels, and then our run involved lots of gorgeous views and trails (and plenty of huffing and puffing on my end!).
It was another great day in Colorado Springs... here's hoping this ...

I am soo ITU!
Category: Grad School, cool stuff, i'm moving here, training | 5 Comments
I just bought my ticket to Korea for the 2010 Gangweon ASTC Long Distance Triathlon Asian Championships. I am so excited! This will be my first time in Korea and my first time doing an ITU long-course race (it's not draft legal like Olympic distance ITU races, and the distances are 3k swim/80k bike/20k run). The course looks gorgeous, and hard, just what I like. What makes this race even cooler to me is that I get to overnight in Tokyo on my way to and from Korea! I have always wanted to visit Tokyo - my uncle Bill has lived in Tokyo for the past 35 years, and I can't think of a better tour guide for ...

I'm in Salt Lake City. I'm flying from San Diego (yes I know I just got there) to BWI, connecting through SLC, but there's a delay, thankfully before we all got on the plane. Of course I'm in the airport where you have to walk across two concourses to find the Starbucks, which is shoved in the corner by a giant men's restroom, so all you smell is disinfectant, I do think this was intentional here in Mormon-land. But, I found it! And used my $7 stuck-in-the-airport meal voucher on a cappuccino and bran muffin. Thanks Delta! Also there is free wifi here so that's exciting.
My first few days in San Diego were awesome. I'm staying at my aunt and ...

I made it!!

This week has been awesome and worthy of a play-by-play. Monday I drove 823 miles from Seattle to San Francisco, where I stayed with my friend Maisie who I know from U.Va., although we were distant acquaintances there and didn't become great friends until we randomly ran into each other in San Francisco in 2003.
On Tuesday I swam with Jaffa at USF (nice pool, but $15 drop-in fee, boo). He is Irish/Canadian-Native-American, a bike messenger, fellow triathlete, and one of my favourite friends. We met in 2002 when I was a legal assistant and coordinated all the messenger services for my firm. I hated ...

As if that weren’t excitement enough!

It's been an eventful week, so much so that I can't even remember what happened on Monday and Tuesday. Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday (my favourite) were all about Ben and helping him get better from afar. For those of you keeping track, his leptospirosis test came back negative, so we still don't know what is wrong. He was discharged from the hospital yesterday but is still experiencing headaches and fever. It's very frustrating, but he's got a great attitude in the face of the unknown.
As if that weren't dramatic enough, I had some adventures of my own :) . At noon on Thursday, Loren and I solved the world's/Kelly's ...

HOSPITALIZATION?!!?
Category: trials and tribs | 2 Comments
This is not my news, so I haven't talked about it yet, but Ben is really sick. He's in the hospital in Colorado Springs, here is his blog post about it. They still don't know what's wrong with him. I wish I could drop everything and fly out there right now, but instead, his parents are heading out there tomorrow, and I'm going to proceed with my plans, for now.

Grand Marathon Whirlwind Tour of the East Coast
Category: Grad School, i'm moving here, training | Leave a Comment
I spent the bulk of today navigating travel websites and class schedules and department faculty listings, coming up with the most efficient way to visit four schools in four states while still trying to have time for a run or a swim, or, gasp, a spin bike?!
Training tips for the travel-weary, anyone?
Here's the plan (and, by the way, this is all starting from San Diego, I'm skipping the part about me getting from Seattle to San Diego because I already wrote about that, but it hasn't happened yet.)
Sometime before Monday 3/22: FedEx Ground a bike to Colorado.
Monday 3/22:
6 a.m. flight from San Diego to JFK. ...

...it just took me 15 minutes in the Goodwill donation drop-off line, with lots of honking cars behind me, to figure out that you have to depress the brake AND the power button in order to turn the car on and make it go anywhere. It's obviously not my Prius.
I've made a lot of downsizing and packing progress, but I am going to delay my departure from Seattle for a few days. For one thing, I'm not feeling hurried to leave this view, but I'm also waiting on a super-extra special delivery. Plus, all this traveling and schlepping has left insufficient time for training. Last ...

Courtenay are you standing on rocks?
Category: Lazer Helium, Lazer Helmets, enjoy the blog, family, trials and tribs | Leave a Comment
Yes.
Yes I am standing on rocks. I am standing here, pretending to be kicking in place like everyone else, because I still can't figure out how to do egg-beater kick and I whacked the crap out of my foot and cursed the stupid rocks until I realized that I could stand on them!
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------
So went my last morning in Honolulu, at the group swim at Kaimana. I actually whacked my foot in the same place on ...
