Our pool, in St. Edward's State Park, is closing at the end of December. It is not scheduled to re-open. I'm really sad about this. Even though I won't be in Seattle much in the coming months, I think it's a shame to lose this great facility. Obviously there are a lot of issues involved, but I do feel that in a major metropolitan area with a pool system in such high demand that masters and youth swim teams get assigned 4:45 a.m. (yes, a.m.) practice times, the only reason a pool fails is poor management. (not this bike) In ...
Yay! Today was my longest run since August 23rd! I did four whole miles... it took me 32 minutes and 8 seconds, but my heart rate was high enough that I would have expected it to take 24 minutes and 8 seconds. But it was awesome. I think I can fairly safely say that the microtear in my achilles is healed. I can also safely say that I am really out of shape. I wound up taking two months completely off from running on land, I was really diligent about aquajogging until late September, when I realized that there was no hope of being sufficiently healed to race again in 2009 - after that, I didn't do any ...
We went skiing! It was kind of hard. I did OK by myself on the bunny slope but then Ben was like "oh this lift has a really easy run too, it's just longer than the bunny slope" and next thing you know, I am spending a ton of time on my butt (so, by the way, was Chris) as a million snowboarders and skiers come careening down this really steep and scary hill. Eventually I made it, after doing this zig-zag pattern that involved falling over at almost every corner in order to turn around. It was exhausting! I did sort of figure ...
My goal for the weekend is to get at least one grad school application submitted (out of seven total). Latest obstacles to this goal include: -discovery of yet another essay I need to write ("describe a situation where you displayed leadership")(my tweaking skills will be put the test here. I think my community service essay is going to double as a leadership essay... same thing, right? The other choice would be to write about starting the VAC Cycling Team but ugh, that sounds boring.) -Columbia requires a "quantitative resume" in addition to a regular one. The quantitative one has all my pertinent coursework (yay transcript), what I learned (yay online course descriptions and courses that still exist 10 years later), and ...
Well, I don't have *official* word yet as to whether this week's scariness was H1N1 (understandably, the hospital has more important things to do than call me back with my lab result!) but I'm pretty sure that's what it was. And I am feeling way better, no more fainting, thank god. Thank you for all the well-wishes! Tomorrow I am going to re-attempt commencement of my winter training for the THIRD TIME this fall! I have had enough of getting random sicknesses that the whole country is also getting. Strep throat, swine flu, it's ridiculous. This weekend, though, I enjoyed some off-season fun. Ben and I went up to Vancouver, and it was awesome! We went for a ...
Excitement and high drama. Yesterday I was feeling kind of not-awesome, but I was at work, and I don't know, work doesn't usually make me feel awesome, so I was ready to just chalk it up to "rainy Tuesday in Seattle in November" blues. Except by 4 p.m., all I'd had the appetite for was a grapefruit, a small coffee, and a bar - normally this would not get me past 9 a.m.! Perhaps my feelings of not-awesome were legit. The evening went by fairly normally - I worked on stuff, Ben worked on stuff, we helped each other with stuff, I made him feel my forehead a billion times, we both decided that the only thing that was feverish was his ...
Last night I headed through torrential nastiness, over hill and dale and pioneer square, squeezed my car into a non-existent parking spot, all to see Ghostland Observatory at the Showbox SoDo. The Ghostland Observatory show I bought my ticket after hearing two Ghostland songs on the radio (tracks 2 and 3 here). This can be a risky proposition because there are tons of bands who put out one or two good songs and everything else is crap, but risk makes life interesting and I needed an excuse to flat-iron my hair and don my skinny ...
I've announced a lot of Hawaii trips on this blog over the years. This might be the last one, however - little brother is planning to move off the island and my open invitation to visit whenever I like is moving with him! Anyway, 40 days till the next trip - as usual, of course, I can't wait, it's going to be great, I absolutely can't wait. In the meanwhile I'm being productive amongst all the rain and darkness here in Seattle. (Chris is trying to insist that September and October haven't been that bad here this year, to which I am insisting he has gone senile. It's ...
My favorite Rachel Ross-designed Splish suit is now available in my favorite color combination, red, white, and blue! (Yes, Ben's Olympic hopefulness has turned me into a patriot AND a swimming aficionado.) And it's also available in my second-favorite colors: pink and pink. I still like the original gray design, but the new colors look great. Get your towels ready, 'cause it's about to go down :) . Further browsing revealed a host of colorful new Splish suits for those of us who get our fall and winter cheer from ...
In this case "it" is not someone's kid, but is instead Lady Gaga's insidious, insipid single "Poker Face". Eric Cartman went and made it AWESOME. I mean sweet. Just try to disagree with me... Speaking of mu-zak, I went and bought myself a ticket to see Ghostland Observatory at Showbox SoDo this Friday. The 21+ show is on Friday night, and the all ages show is Saturday. I asked the girl at the box office if one was better than the other. "What kind of question is that? Do you LIKE being at a show with a bunch of high schoolers?" Also, in order to "afford" this ticket (thanks, ...
