After four weeks at my mom's house, I have determined the most exciting word in the English language. It's "WELL." Spoken by my mom, preceded by a deep breath in, accompanied by a hand gesture of some kind, and most important, this kind of "WELL." is always followed by some form of "news". My mom loooooves her neighborhood news, she is on top of it and very analytical about local happenings and personalities. She actually apologizes on the phone to people when she has no news! But "WELL." means she has something really good. "WELL. She claimed that he started smoking pot so that's why she had an affair, but I know for a fact that the pot situation was a ...
A hefty percentage of my readership would like to hear more about my training. Because I happen to like this hefty percentage, I am happy to oblige. First off let's talk about cycling. I loooooovvveee cycling in Maryland during the Spring and Summer. The state is excellent at road-maintenance, there are a lot of quiet country roads that are smooth and fast, and everything around is green and beautiful. Major side-bonus for me is that these country roads go by a lot of horse farms! The first time I brought my bike to my mom's was back in 2004, I remember going for long rides and seeing no other cyclists. Now I do see a good amount of recreational ...
A few hours ago I was constructing elaborate plans to delete my website. Or ignore it, or sabotage it, or something. I am bored with myself, bored with making the same old proclamations of "oh I am going to move and go somewhere awesome where I can purSUE my DREAMS!". Or "oh I am going to work hard and get so fast at swimming!". Those are my two primary repeat-offender empty promises. That and grad school. I don't even know why I talk about it. My last post was pretty truthful... go down the list, oh that looks hard, oh I am not good enough for that, oh that is boring, ew, ew ew ew. With that outlook, going to grad ...
I'm breaking my policy of not talking about training on my blog, and since Kelly just prominently referenced my policy on her blog, I just want to point out that I know I'm a hypocrite but we can all just deal with it. Anyway today, as part of my plan to just deal with stuff, I swam 4000 yards! I have never ever swum 4000 yards in one workout! One time last year I did two swim workouts in one day, and they added up to about 4500 yards, but since I had snacks and a nap and blog time in between, that doesn't count. So today was very exciting. Apparently, I can do it! My swimming is still not ...
OK, I have definitely moved on from my race this weekend, time for my blog to do the same! The new kitty (prematurely named Thor) is doing well. He's been eating and drinking and beginning to make friends with one of the other cats, although he is still generally hissing at them. The best is when he hisses at the deaf cats when they walk by... they can't hear you, little one! He's still really skinny but it's only been a few days. It seems pretty obvious that he was someone's pet and they dumped him off, which sucks because people suck and are dumb, but maybe he is happier here and will have a better life. He's been neutered, and ...
A few years ago, back when I was a bike racer and the world was new and all, someone said to me that you have to finish in last place before you finish in first place. I told her she was "crazy" (I'm paraphrasing here). That makes zero sense. But I have kind of decided that perhaps that idea could have some merit. Because sometimes, racing hard when you know you are in last place in your field is a lot harder than racing hard when you are at the front, going for the podium or prize money or a qualification slot. Or a top-10 or even the ability to say you weren't last. You are racing for yourself. Today I raced the ...
Although I think it's by virtue of my low-letter-of-the-alphabet last name, rather than by virtue of my status in the tri world ;) . I'm waiting for the Columbia Triathlon pro meeting to start, so exciting, maybe I will get Chrissie Wellington to autograph my tank top. Yesterday I got an email from the San Francisco Team in Training group. "Hello, Courtenay the Triathlete!" it said. "Like the sound of that? Well, TNT can make it come true!" Um, thanksguys. But I think I am already a triathlete. With that in mind, I AM a triathlete, I will have a great race tomorrow. Here is the plan. I had a dream that I swam a 25:01 so I am going to try to ...
Cosmo! No I don't really drink Cosmo's. But that is the name of the spectacular creature I have the pleasure of riding while I am here in Maryland. How did I get so lucky! um I'm busy eatingyou appear to have a CARROT The other reason I am lucky is my Seattle chiropractor, Phil, says that horseback riding is great for my back and neck! Riding encourages good posture and engages core muscles and balancing muscles. ...
So I picked my mom up from the airport last night, she came home from her whirlwind trip to Morocco to attend what sounds like the wedding of the year. She was a guest on the groom's side, and the groom is my mom's former step-daughter's ex-husband (so like my ex-half-brother-in-law or something), who this time around married a real live Moroccan princess. I couldn't make up a better story if I tried! And I can't wait to see photos, but my mom said "the camera was broken" which sounds suspiciously like operator error... I'm sort of fast My life while she ...
Which basically means I am talking to lots of animals and not a lot of people! I arrived here in Maryland on Tuesday night, yesterday I took my mom to the airport for her trip to Morocco, and now I'm home alone with 8 cats (none of whom are allowed in the house :( ) and 7 (SEVEN!!!! :) ) horses. So far it's going great. Everyone loves me, probably because I am the one feeding them, but I don't mind bribing animals for their affection. Apparently I am delicious! My mom is not your standard "cat person", she loves all animals ...
