On Saturday I am running a 10K Trail Race.

Thing 1: I have not run a 10K (aside from ones within a triathlon) since October 7, 1990.

Thing 2: CHECK OUT THIS WEATHER FORECAST!!!!

This is going to be sooo awesome!

But, what do I wear?? All you runner folks, help! Shorts? Thin tights? What? And does it matter if I don’t have trail running shoes? Do I wear tempo trainers or lightweight racers or regular trainers or what?? Also, numbers… do I put my number on a race belt or do I pin it on my clothes? But what if I race in a sports bra and tights? Omg this outfit part is WAY more stressful than the race part. I *am* going to wear earrings and lip gloss though.

So you have nothing to worry about then, it sounds like all the important decisions have been made already.

Make sure you have gloves and something on your ears. I have raced in sports bra, shorts, gloves and ear headband thing before. If the high is 44, you may need tights. Depends on how tough you are. I would wear racing flats unless the trail is really rugged.

AH! This is an outfit decision I might actually be able to help with! :)

If it was me, I would wear shorts and either a sports bra or a thin running shirt. I would warm up in full gear and then right before the start take off all the heavy stuff and you’ll feel light as a feather! I agree with the gloves, depending on how you feel about wearing gloves (my hands always get so cold but yours might not). And I would wear racing flats too.

Runners don’t know what race belts are so if your goal is to fit in with the running scene, I would pin the number on – either to the shirt or, if you go w/sports bra, to your shorts. Crinkle the number up nice and good.

Oh, and don’t forget the earrings and lip gloss of course.

    Good luck Courtenay!

the important thing is that you have to look like a serious runner. do not wear a race belt. shorts will probably be fine. if its raining less clothing is probably better because you’ll get wet no matter what and wet clothes are heavy and gross.

    ;) :) :( :P

    there.

Am I allowed to heckle you?

my god you need to move somewhere warmer! I won’t be much help with the clothes because I’m still trying to figure that one out (NC is frigid compared to FL.) But I will say, about the shoes – if it’s very rooty, leafy, and rocky then you may want to do tempo trainers or even regular trainers. It could be slippery (I’ve made this mistake – NOT FUN). But if it’s more like a bridle trail, then racing flats are good. So maybe be super tri-geek anal and bring both and try them out before the race?

First of all, props to Kelly for her fine use of emoticons.

I agree with Smithers…you’ve got it covered with the earrings and lip gloss.

Are you going with huge dangling earrings like the Williams sisters play tennis with…I don’t know how they do that and still kick ass!

    Good luck Court!

I am a shorts wearer no matter what the temps tend to be. I always find that if I wear anything more I’m over heating after two miles. So I suggest shorts, lip gloss, and a light water resistant long sleeve top. I don’t know much about the bra aspects so look else were for that advice. Oh and since it is a shorter trail race I would use something light weight with plenty of tread that you don’t mind getting good and muddy, doesn’t have to be a trail shoe. As to the number… are you really going to wear a race belt for a 10k??? I know you just turned thirty and all but…really??? I pin to my shirt, wherever you pin it just make sure you take the pins out soon after you finish (little bastards always leave tiny rust spots on all my white tops). Best of luck and don’t be afraid to get dirty!

SHORTS always…see, this is typical Chicago weather, C….gloves, yes, long sleeve SKIN TIGHT BASE LAYER TOP – or short sleeved one (skin tight base layer) + shorts…you will be fine if you warmup enough! GOOD LUCK and have fun!!! :)

44 is fucking cold. Seriously, what the fuck is wrong with incline? I would be wearing a fleece jacket with a shell and tights under shorts under warm pants and three pair of underwear and gloves under mittens and ear mitts over my beanie under my wool hat under my ski goggles. Screw racing flats, wear snow boots.

    Race fast, have fun.
