Me!
I got a massage yesterday and I am WORKED OVER. I used to get massages pretty regularly when I lived in Oakland, but since moving up to Tahoe a year ago I have gotten maybe 3 massages, mostly due to economics. Recently though my back has been a disaster area, getting tighter and tighter and resulting in numbness and a progression of soreness to my extremities. Not cool. For example, swimming anything longer than a 200 my right hand would go completely numb (and so would most of my left), so I would have to swim breastroke for ~20 yards to clear out the numbness and then resume my freestyle.
Thankfully I have an amazing massage-therapist friend, who happened ...

All Dressed Up and Nowhere to Go
Category: enjoy the blog | 4 Comments
This might be me tomorrow night, all dressed up for Halloween with nowhere to go. Since I live on a boring old-people's mountain top (a.k.a. Lake Tahoe), there aren't exactly a ton of options to celebrate the holiday. The one thing that everyone goes to is this 80's cover band called Tainted Love, they are playing just 4 miles down the road in Crystal Bay, but tickets have been sold out for ages. Supposedly there are tons of other people who couldn't get tickets either and there is a bar with a DJ next door or something so I might just go to that.
Thankfully I didn't exactly put a lot of time and energy into my costume - I'd decided ...

Tahoe Rim Trail Redux
Category: enjoy the blog | 3 Comments
Today I headed out to do the same Tahoe Rim Trail ride I did last week, although this time I spared the boys the hassle of waiting for me and hit the trail alone. I also headed out about an hour earlier than last week, so I wouldn't have to blast down Tunnel Creek Road in near darkness!
It was, like last week, a beautiful ride. I started out at 6400' elevation, rode up past the Diamond Peak Ski Resort to the Tyrolean Downhill (I went up what they are going down)(and, um, my bike is not like their bikes). It's a good 45 minutes or so of climbing to get up to the Tahoe Rim Trail, ...

Last big week of 2008 – done!
Category: cool stuff | 6 Comments
So I was feeling all self-satisfied for finishing up my last big week of training for 2008. I did all my workouts, every single one of them, and for the first time since March my hours surpassed the 20 hour mark.
But OMG only 20 hours?! That is, like, so not hard core! Ugh. [insert rhapsodic waxing about bike racer days, back when I did a 32.5 hour week and some big old 25-plus weeks cause bike racing is soooooo cool, bla bla bla]. Whatever, somehow 20.25 hours is a lot for me now and I'll take it. Plus I think that 20 hours on a bike are a lot different (and not quite as fun :) ) compared to ...

Kitty!!!
This is what happens when we are home alone on a Friday night after a long week... impromptu photo session! My kitty LOVES me. Actually the weird thing is that I really think he does, he hangs out with me all the time even though I torment the shit out of him whenever I feel like it since I am way bigger and he is cute and soft and persnickety.

1. Invite yourself along on a ride with the high schooler, his dad, and a friend, all of whom are good at riding their bikes in the dirt, especially compared to you.
2. Bring up the rear on this ride. Eventually the high schooler will call his dad from further along on the trail though, asking permission to please ride along the rest of the route by himself without stopping and waiting for you again.
3. Go to the high schooler's family's house for dinner.
4. Say that you think an all-Washoe-county-High-School Halloween Dance down in Reno "sounds awful" (which, hello, it does).
5. Point out the obvious truth that there aren't many colleges in this country who pay mountain biking/cyclocross racing kids to ...

Swimming in Style
Category: enjoy the blog | 7 Comments
I'm definitely one to dispense advice when it comes to cycling fashion or normal-people fashion (i.e. not spandex/helmet/sweat related) but when it comes to swimming I need a little help with my accessories.
Last week Ben informed me that I needed new goggles.
"What's wrong with these ones? They're blue like my suit!"
"Um, they're totally dorky."
OMG I had no idea!!!!! This required immediate attention and education!
And, today I swam in my NEW goggles which I already love! Goggle-face is not as bad as with my other pair, I can see great, the pink rim kind of gives everything a rosy happy glow, and best of all is ...

My weekend was an awesome whirlwind. It consisted of:
550 miles of driving,
one 3 hour cross bike ride in the Marin Headlands (bummer that I didn't have a camera),
one cyclocross race (ended prematurely by a pinch flat)(oh and someone there did have a camera but I looked like a scared rabbit, as usual),
one Bjarne Riis-type tantrum thanks to the flat tire (yes I threw my bike, and yes it deserved it),
a lot of food,
a viewing of the new Oliver Stone movie "W" (it was O.K. aside from two annoying things: 1. I started to think maybe W is hot, which he is NOT, it's Josh Brolin who's a little bit hot, and 2. ...

I'm greedy, I know, but if YOU swam 100 yards in 1:46 you'd be greedy for improvement too!
That was my threshold pace a little over a month ago, before I started working with Jen Harrison on my swim. Today I did another test workout and my pace is now 1:41! Wooo 5 seconds! Slowly but surely, I am becoming less slow ;) . And do feel free to leave me a comment telling me what I have heard a trillion times already.... "you have a lot of work to do in the pool this winter!" I know. I know. Iknowiknowiknow. But actually I have the easy job, I just get in the water and do the workout - ...

I’m good at Resting
Category: enjoy the blog | 4 Comments
I am feeling so boring this week. It's a rest week, which of course means I am even more tired than usual and seem to take even fewer naps than usual. So if I make it to next week without feeling sleep deprived it might be a major miracle.
Today it is gorgeous out, and I really want to go for a ride in the mountains on my cross bike. But after re-reading that paragraph I just wrote, I am thinking a nap and a self-done mani/pedi might be a better use of my time. Even though it's the end of the season, and in my head I know that I am fit and I just need to arrive at Silverman ...
