Over the past couple of weeks I have become a big fan of Nutrition53’s meal-replacement product, Lean1. I love the way it tastes and, like I said in my review from a couple of weeks ago, it’s very convenient! So I got to thinking about 1. Lean1’s capacity as a lean muscle-building supplement and, by extension, a weight loss supplement and 2. my last few races of the season and then I decided… why not use Lean1 to lose a couple of excess pounds and get myself into the best racing shape possible for the 5430 Long Course Tri, LA Triathlon, and Scott Tinley’s?

Great plan!

And just to make sure I stay on track with the plan, I will blog about it here every week. I am not going to keep a food journal or switch to fat-free yogurt or some other drastic nonsense, basically I will continue with my same eating pattern and drink one Lean1 in place of a mid-day snack. If it makes me eat less, great, but if I have a big training day and Lean1 is just another bit of food to fuel my system, that’s great too. So, to keep tabs on my progress, every week I will note three measurements: the circumference of my left quad at its widest point, the circumference of my waist, and my weight according to my little bathroom scale from Target.

Today’s Numbers
Quad: 52.5 cm
Waist: 65 cm
Weight: 117 lb

Last Tuesday, when I decided to really follow a program with Lean1, I got on the scale and it said 118, so that is my starting weight. However I didn’t think to take the other measurements so today will mark the beginning of those.

I look forward to following your progress. Do you read Beth Newell’s blog? She measures her quads every Thursday. It’s around 62cm, but I wouldn’t expect yours to be that big since your waist is much smaller than hers.

why just the left quad? Steve is convinced his quads are different sizes.

also, how do you weigh less than me if i’m a “pipsqueak”?

now i really want to measure my quad, maybe i can find a tape measurer at work

I read Beth’s blog too – it is actually what gave me the idea for the quad measurement! (plus it sounds way better than “thigh measurement” – that just makes me think of myself as a piece of chicken or something ;) )

well, the left one looks a little bigger to me than the right one, but i don’t really feel like measuring both and confirming to the whole world that i am LOPSIDED!

i used a string and then measured the lengths on a tape measure, the one i have is metal and it doesn’t really make a good circle.

hmmm mines only 49 centimers according to my scientific process of wrapping a cable around my leg and holding it up to the ruler online.

now i want to know what kind of GIANT quads you have

Oh boy…now I’m going to want to try this and then I will feel like a giant. How tall are you, Court?

Sigh…well anyway, I’m curious to see how it works for you. Genetically speaking, I just have a really tough time losing weight around my waist; any time I gain wait, it goes to my waist FIRST. I feel like I’d have to give up all wine/beer and cheese to really have a trim midsection. I figure as long as I keep it in check overall then that’s good enough for me. Still, I’ve looked for a way to possibly lose a few lbs during race season and it is SO HARD! I got a sample of Lean 1 but obviously you’d have to buy a lot more if you wanted to see how it worked. So I will see how it works for you and then maybe I’ll give it a shot. :)

I’m surprised by how many women don’t have soft tape measures. I have one that I keep in my cycling clothing bag.

I expect all cyclists to be lopsided. My right quad is 52.5 cm, while my left quad is 51 cm. Curiously, my right and left biceps are the same size.
