They kept saying it was 'fine' and that the air quality was actually alright. I thought "are you kidding me?" It was HORRIBLE in Santa Rosa...60 miles away! I was so angry that they wouldn't cancel it. Then the day before a state of emergency was called in Ukiah (where Lake Mendocino is) so that pretty much sealed the deal and they had to cancel it. You can take the certification course and be on the front lines in 3 days. It's not easy, it's not fun and there's a chance you can get very hurt (how does cooked in a mylar tent sound). You also have to pass a fitness test (or did) which involved going up and down stairs without your HR getting out of the accepted range.
